NFC Sensors Based on Energy Harvesting for IoT Applications

    Get PDF
The availability of low-cost near-field communication (NFC) devices, the incorporation of NFC readers into most current mobile phones, and the inclusion of energy-harvesting (EH) capabilities in NFC chips make NFC a key technology for the development of green Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In this chapter, an overview of recent advances in the field of battery-less NFC sensors at 13.56 MHz is provided, and a comparison to other short-range RFID technologies is given. After reviewing power transfer in NFC, recommendations for the practical design of NFC-based sensor tags and NFC readers are made. A list of commercial NFC integrated circuits with energy-harvesting capabilities is also provided. A survey of recent battery-less NFC sensors developed by the group including soil moisture, water content, pH, color, and implanted NFC sensors is done

Historia de lo fantástico en la cultura española contemporánea (1900-2015)

    Get PDF
Coming out from the research activities of the Grupo de Estudios sobre lo Fantástico (GEF), based at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, this edited volume provides a comprehensive account of the fantastic across literature, theatre, film, television, comics and short fiction produced throughout the twentieth and the twenty-first century in Spain. The volume edited by David Roas, who is also the Director of GEF, brings together the work of sixteen contributors, most of whom are associated with the research group, in a total of fourteen chapters. I invite readers to navigate the research group’s website (www.lofantastico.com) where they will be able to access a significant archive of materials relating to the study of the fantastic

Facing monstrosity in Goya's Los Caprichos (1799)

The aim of this thesis is to offer a re-evaluation of our cultural assumptions concerning the monstrous in the work of Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes (1746- 1828), specifically his collection of etchings Los Caprichos (1799). In my study there are three closely related areas of investigation: the image of the monstrous body in Goya's work; the cultural aspects of monsters and monstrous forms in Western discourses and in the Spanish Enlightenment; and the theoretical encounter between the history of the sciences and deconstructive criticism. The interaction between these three areas provides a background against which to understand the Goyaesque body within the context of Spanish cultural practices. Through an examination of eighteenth-century Spanish reformist absolutism, this thesis explores the contradictions, limits, or insufficiencies of the Spanish Ilustraciön in order to establish the ideological, cultural and artistic context out of which Los Caprichos emerged. One of the central issues that runs through my study is to establish how far, and in what ways, Los Caprichos can be seen as an Enlightenment work. Traditional readings of Los Caprichos have paid very little critical attention to the monstrous human bodies depicted in the collection in the context of eighteenth century discourses on monstrosity and corporeality. Los Caprichos invite a more complex, multifaceted consideration both of the body and the monster, of corporeality and monstrosity. By focusing on the Goyaesque body, the aim of this thesis is to open up a series of questions on the ways in which the monstrous body can be thought of in the critique of culture. This study therefore seeks to provide a cultural history of the monstrous body in the art of Goya, showing how his pictorial representations in the collection of etchings Los Caprichos offer a critique of reason and problematize the perception and treatment of (European and Spanish) Enlightenment configurations of the body. It is my contention that Los Caprichos can be read in Enlightenment ways yet there are elements of an ideological, cultural and artistic nature that problematize such credentials, pointing to the limits and contradictions of the Spanish Enlightenment itself

Star-shaped wheel for mechanical micro-Doppler modulation

    Get PDF
This letter investigates the possibility of using deliberated geometries for rotating targets, which may improve the detectability and classification by means of its micro-Doppler signature. Beyond the signature provided by the rotation rate of the target, every particular geometry leads to specific and unique modulation waveforms that increase the information related to this target. Different star-shaped wheels with particular geometries have been designed demonstrating different reflection characteristics and modulation waveforms. The signature of these rotating star-shaped wheels has been measured in an anechoic chamber using a general-purpose 24 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar platform and a detection algorithm based on the derivative of the cross-correlation is proposed to validate the proposed approach

    VA Mental Health Integration

    Get PDF
White River Junction Medical Center veterans are screened annually for mental health disorders. Patients who screen positive are treated in Primary Care, Primary Mental Health Care (PMHC) clinic and/or Specialized Mental Health Care clinic. We only consider patients with one or more of depression, PTSD or Alcohol Abuse. The VA needs to evaluate the effectiveness of medication and psychotherapy treatments provided. For this reason, we identified a target population and implemented a quality scale to track quality of treatments. We also analyzed the PMHC clinic to determine the workforce necessary to support a certain quality level. We utilized a discrete-event simulation model of the PMHC clinic to analyze the system if all the patients with positive screening were to be seen

Sustainability Education and Awareness for Santa Fe and Native American Communities

    Get PDF
This project compiled sustainability education and awareness resources for the Santa Fe and Native American communities. The team examined the resources currently available online and met with various organizations in the area that are knowledgeable about sustainable best practices in education and implementation of agriculture, renewable energy, and water conservation. The team then created a pair of websites with relevant information in order to allow the community to easily find ways to participate in and learn about sustainability

Public health expenditure in Spain: is there partisan behaviour?

    Get PDF
This study examines the disparities in the evolution of Spanish regional public health expenditures from 1991 to 2010. We find that the recent development of the Spanish regional public health system have led the regions to reflect a very heterogeneous pattern of behaviour. These differences depend on economic and demographic factors, but also on the ideology of the regional governments. The longer a region is governed by a right-wing party, the lower the public health expenditure. This result suggests the presence of clear partisan behaviour in the Spanish public health system
